Norwegian Celebrates First Successful Year Of Transatlantic 737 MAX Operation

The 737 MAX provides passengers with a quieter onboard experience, whilst it significantly reduces both fuel use and carbon dioxide emissions.

NEW YORK CITY (JUNE 15, 2018)– Norwegian, the World’s Best Low-Cost Long-Haul Airline and Airline of the Year 2017, today celebrates the first anniversary of its low-cost medium-haul flights from the United States to Europe operated on the Boeing 737 MAX-8 aircraft. Last year, Norwegian was only the second carrier in the world to put the 737 MAX into commercial service, and the first carrier to use the new aircraft type on transatlantic flights, paving the way for a new, unique concept of air travel by opening up new routes into smaller airports.

Norwegian currently flies the longest routes of any Max operator, taking its Max 8s on 3,000-nm transatlantic trips connecting New York with Bergen, Belfast, Dublin, Edinburgh, and Shannon, and Providence, Rhode Island, with Belfast, Cork, Dublin, Edinburgh, and Shannon..

With more than 300,000 customer traveling on Norwegian’s new transatlantic MAX routes in the past year, the three most poular MAX routes the past year were Stewart-Edinburgh, Stewart-Dublin and Providence-Dublin. Due to demand, Stewart-Dublin became a double-daily service earlier this year. U.S. demand has remained high with over 60 % of the transatlantic tickets purchased within the U.S.

“Today we have reached yet another milestone celebration. A year ago, Norwegian’s 737 MAX transatlantic service paved the road for a completely new concept of low-cost travel. The aircraft allowed us to open new routes between the U.S. and Europe, and explore new possibilities for the future,” said Thomas Ramdahl, Norwegian’s Chief Commercial Officer.

Through its expansion the airline opened up new, unserved routes at smaller airports, including New York-Stewart International Airport in Newburgh, NY, and T.F. Green International Airport in Providence, Rhode Island. The arrival of Norwegian at both airports has contributed to an economic upsurge in those regions, as well as better convenience for air travel.

“This is still early days for our transatlantic service, which is the driving force behind Norwegian’s growth. American customers have shown great interest in our affordable fares on the MAX routes and we will continue to welcome more passengers onboard as we expand the service in the future,” said Ramdahl.

Passenger count more than doubled at Stewart International Airport in the Hudson Valley since Norwegian’s arrival to the airport. In response to the highly successful Norwegian routes, Stewart Airport will rebrand to give its name more international recognition. The airport will soon be renamed New York Stewart International Airport. Additionally, the Stewart Airport Express operates Norwegian-branded buses between Port Aurhority Bus Station in New York City’s Midtown to the airport that are timed with Norwegian’s departures and arrivals.

“With their vast global network, Norwegian serves as a vital gateway for the region to Europe, and is a key supporter of New York’s tourism industry. From last June through April, the airline operated nearly 800 outbound flights and carried almost 215,000 passengers, helping to make this the nation’s fastest growing airport,” said Ed Harrison, Stewart International Airport’s general manager.

Providence’s T. F. Green International Airportalso saw an increase in passenger air travel with the arrival of Norwegian, adding over 97,960 passengers to the airport this year.

Beginning October 28, Norwegian will increase the frequency on its Providence to Dublin route to a daily service from five weekly flights. On routes from New York to Edinburgh and Shannon, service will be increased to daily from four weekly and three weekly flights, respectively. Additionally, Norwegian will continue its double daily service from New York to Dublin through the winter season.

Norwegian’s flights from Providence to Cork, Edinburgh and Shannon have been adjusted to a summer seasonal service due to lower demand during the winter season. Flights will continue through October and be assessed for the summer 2019 schedule.

Norwegian will take delivery of 12 Boeing 737 MAX 8s this year, and has 100 Boeing 737 MAX on firm order. The 737 MAX provides passengers with a quieter onboard experience, whilst it significantly reduces both fuel use and carbon dioxide emissions.
