Norwegian and McKinney Celebrate Free Shipping Day by Launching “The Best Free Shipping Sale on Earth”

Press release   •   Dec 14, 2016 08:00 EST

Norwegian's free shipping sale is the only sale where the buyer gets shipped for free

NEW YORK (December 14, 2016) — Norwegian, the World’s Best Low-Cost Long-Haul Airline and Europe’s Best Low-Cost Airline, and its agency partner, McKinney, launch The Best Free Shipping Sale on Earth — and send holiday shoppers on an adventure in the process. Norwegian uses this innovative take on “free shipping” to send consumers across the ocean to pick up their holiday items for free instead of waiting at home for delivery.

Beginning on December 16, anyone who visits can choose from 20 items that represent each of Norwegian’s key European destinations. Whether it’s an Italian silk scarf with free shipping to Rome, a paella pan with free shipping to Barcelona or a traditional Norwegian sweater with free shipping to Bergen, the person lucky enough to snag the item will receive a complimentary pair of tickets to go pick it up. Norwegian will also cover the cost of the item — it’s The Best Free Shipping Sale on Earth, after all.

“The holidays are a time of celebration, but they are also a time of inspiration. Because so many shoppers are focused on those elusive last-minute holiday purchases, we wanted to tap into that energy and help Americans see the holidays — and the world — in an entirely new way,” commented Ben Kaufman, Marketing Manager, USA for Norwegian. “We’re turning the very simple idea of ‘free shipping’ upside down so that we can spread joy, quite literally, to the world. State-of-the-art hubs like Oslo-Gardermoen Airport in Norway allow Americans to seamlessly access Norwegian’s extensive network to exciting destinations throughout Europe and Asia.”

“Consumer travel over the holiday season is often a low priority,” said Kerry Fitzmaurice, McKinney’s managing director in New York. “Our campaign works to take advantage of a firmly established retail event in a fun, irresistible and unexpected way.

Most U.S. passengers are familiar with Norwegian’s direct service to Copenhagen, London, Oslo, Paris and Stockholm, but they’re unaware that the airline offers seamless connections to dozens of other notable European cities. By traveling to Oslo, Norwegian’s “shipping hub,” those cities are now within reach for holiday shoppers who use The Best Free Shipping Sale on Earth from December 16–20.

Norwegian used several vehicles to promote this flash sale. From e-commerce social ads and email blasts to a fully integrated partnership with Thrillist, the New York-based travel blog, which includes site takeovers, custom content and event activation.
